Background

Pikey Peak (4068m) is a newly opened trekking destination which sits between the Sagarmatha National Park and Gaurishankar Conservation Area. It is a short trek and offers a great panoramic view of the Everest Range. Sir Edmund Hillary himself claimed this place to be the best place to view the Mt. Everest (8848m). The lusty green forests, gushing rivers, and the Sherpa culture are all the ingredients that make up for this wonderful trek. One of the easier treks in eastern Nepal, Pikey Peak Trek is perfect for those in short of time and trekking experience.

Our 12-day journey begins with your arrival in Kathmandu. You will get a tour of Bhaktapur and Patan districts for a day. The Patan and Bhaktapur durbar squares in these two cities are the perfect depiction of Newar art, craft, and culture and are enlisted as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Then, you will leave Kathmandu Valley and drive to Shivalaya which is the starting point on the trek. From Shivalaya, we pass through villages of Bhandara, Goli, and Nwaol to reach Pikey Peak I (4068m). The trail is filled with rhododendron forests, lush valleys, and terraced farming lands. Pikey Peak offers mesmerizing views of the mountains in Everest and Gaurishankar ranges including Everest (8848m), Cho Oyu (8201m), Lhotse (8516m), and Gaurishankar (7134m). After exploring the peak for a day, you retrace your step back and pass Jhare and Patale villages on the way. From Patale, you will drive back to Kathmandu and end the Pikey Peak Trek. Pikey Peak Trek is comparatively less crowded and boasts off-beat trails. Along the journey, you will get a firsthand experience of the rich Sherpa culture.

We at Miteri have been organizing a trek to Pikey Peak for a long time now. We have had wonderful reviews in the past about this particular trek. We offer the best service at a genuine cost and provide all types of facilities like transportation, accommodation, and an experienced guide. For more information, feel free to contact us.

On this day, we visit the Lalitpur and Bhaktapur cities where you explore the Patan Durbar Square and Bhaktapur Durbar Square. Smallest of the three durbar squares, Patan Durbar Square was used as a royal palace by the Malla Kings. Many temples, courtyards, statues were built during the Malla Dynasty and the arts and culture of that time are well-preserved in the square. On the other hand, Bhaktapur Durbar Square is the biggest square and has attractions like 55-windowed palace, the Golden Gate, Naytapola Temple, and Bhaktapur Museum to name few.  Bhaktapur is known for pottery, carving and farming mainly.

  • Day 3: Kathmandu to Shivalaya (1790m), 210km, (8-9 hours’ drive)

We take an early morning ride to Shivalaya from Kathmandu. On the way, you will pass through the popular village of Jiri which is a beautiful village and a major tourist destination. It is a bumpy ride from Jiri to Shivalaya. Shivalaya is a beautiful village with plenty of hotels and lodges. Overnight in Shivalaya.

  • Day 4: Shivalaya to Bhandar (2160m) (5-6 hours)

Today, we start our trek after breakfast and walk slowly. For the first half of the trail, we walk mostly uphill. Passing the villages of Bharkhu and Mani Danda, we trek downhill to reach Bhandar. The whole trail goes through many uphill and downhill routes. There are few hotels and lodges in Bhandar which offer basic facilities. Overnight in Bhandar.

  • Day 5: Bhandar to Goli (1760m) (5 Hours)

On this day, we start our trek by walking uphill in the beginning. Since we gain significant altitude this day, it might be a little challenging. We will move slowly at a comfortable pace, through the forests of birch and rhododendron. We trek through the terraced farms passing some small tea houses on the way to arrive at Goli. Overnight in Goli.

  • Day 6: Goli to Nwaol (3280m) (4-5 hours)

The trail from Goli to Nwaol is fairly easy with a slight uphill climb. The trail is filled with forest, Mani stones, and lush fields. We continue the trek along the Olmu River. As the trek continues through forested trails, we reach Nwaol village enjoying the natural beauty all around us. Overnight at Nwaol.

  • Day 7: Nwaol to Pikey Peak (4068m), 4 hours

This is the day where you make the final ascent to Pikey Peak I (4068m). You walk through centuries-old monasteries, Mani stones, and Gumbas. The landscape changes as we walk up to an altitude of over 4000m. The trail to the peak is steep but it is quite short and not too challenging. You can explore the nearby areas and enjoy the sunset views before the end of the day.

  • Day 8: Pikey exploration

Today, we explore and enjoy the view from Pikey Peak. From the top of the peak, one can see panoramic view of Everest (8848 m), Thamserku (6623 m), Kangtega (6782 m), Dorje Lakpa (6966 m), Numbur Himal (6958 m), Makalu (8481 m), Kanchenjunga (8586 m), and Langtang (7227 m). The sunrise view over the Himalayas is breathtaking. You will explore the monasteries around and spend another night in Pikey Peak.

  • Day 9: Pikey to Jhapre (2820m), 5 hours

On this day, we trek downhill for most of the day to arrive at Jhapre. With the views of beautiful mountains, we begin the downhill trek. We walk through rhododendron and pine forests for almost five hours to reach the village of Jhapre. You can also witness the Sherpa cultural performances during your stay in Jhapre. Overnight in Jhapre.

  • Day 10: Jhapre to Patale (2840m), 4 hours

We walk through the lush forest where wild orchids are in full bloom. The trek today goes both uphill and downhill and is followed by some flatlands. Overall, the trek is quite easy. Patale has many homestays for authentic experience staying in the rural villages of Nepal. Overnight in Patale.

  • Day 11:  Patale to Kathmandu (1300m), (8-9 hours)
