Background

The Buddhist Pilgrimage Tour explores the Buddhist Pilgrimage sites scattered around Nepal. Nepal is the birthplace of Gautam Buddha and is considered a holy place with great religious significance by Buddhists. Pilgrims from all around the world visit Nepal to visit Lumbini and other sites like Namo Buddha, Boudhanath, and Swayambhunath. These sites of Nepal have religious significance to the Hindus of Nepal and you will find a mix of Buddhism and Hinduism in Nepal. 

The Buddhist Pilgrimage Tour lasts for nine days including your arrival and departure and starts from Kathmandu. You will be visiting 12 places in total. From Kathmandu, you will drive to Timal which is the first destination on the tour. Here, you can visit the cave of Guru Padmasambhava and then head towards Namobuddha. The next day, you explore Namobuddha and reel in the beautiful monastery that sits on top of a hill. After lunch, you return to Kathmandu stopping in Red Tara Monastery at Bhaktapur for a short visit. In Kathmandu, you will drive to Boudha and visit Boudhanath stupa. The next day, you will be taken to Pharping to visit the Padmasambhava cave. From there, you will visit Swayambhunath Stupa and the Budhanikantha Temple. The next day, you visit the Bhagwan Bahal in Thamel, Golden Temple in Patan, 1000 Buddha Bihar (Maha Boudha Temple) in Patan and end the day visiting Sankhu Bajrayogini (Bodhisattva’s Temple) in Sankhu. The next day, you drive to Lumbini through and spend the night in Lumbini. After visiting Maya Devi temple, World Peace Stupa, Maya Devi Pond, and the Eternal peace flame, you will return to Kathmandu the next day.

Trip Highlights:

  • Day 1: Kathmandu Arrival

    One of our representatives will welcome you as you land at the Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu. A short drive through the busy roads and streets will take you to the hotel in the valley. As the day doesn’t entail any scheduled activities, you can stroll around and enjoy the Newari heritages.

  • Day 2: Drive from Kathmandu to Timal (59 km, 2-3 hours), and Namobuddha (32 km, 1-2 hours)

    The next day, your tour will begin with a drive to Timal where the Cave of Guru Padmasambhava is located. Timal is a village in Kavre district famous for Bodhichitta (praying beads). There are many meditation caves in Timal including other small lakes and monasteries. After visiting these sites, you will drive to Namobuddha. The night is spent in Namobuddha.

  • Day 3: Namo Buddha sightseeing and drive to Boudha, Kathmandu (43 km, 2-3 hours)

    The next morning, you will explore Namo Buddha, one of the most sacred Buddhist places. You can visit the Thrangu Tashi Yangtse Monastery and Namo Buddha stupa and also go for a short walk across the nearby villages. After lunch, you head back to Kathmandu. On the way, you will be taken to Red Tara Monastery in Bhaktapur. Then, you will be taken to Boudha where you visit the Boudhanath stupa where you can enjoy the Buddhist art, culture, and practices.

  • Day 4: Visit Pharping (25 km), Swayambhunath (20 km) and Budhanikantha

    You will drive to the south of Kathmandu, Pharping. There are two caves of Guru Padmasambhava; as Asura Cave/ Upper Cave of Yangle Sho, and Lower Cave of Yangle Sho. You can visit Bajrayogini Temple as well. Then, you head towards Swayambhunath stupa. It is the oldest temple of Nepal and is also a UNESCO world heritage site. Afterward, you drive to Budhanikantha Temple for a short visit and then, return to your hotel.

  • Day 5: Visit Thamel Bhagwan Bahal, Patan Golden Temple, 1000 Buddha Bihar, and Sankhu Bajrayogini

    Today, you visit Bhagwan Bahal in Thamel, which holds many statues and temples of Gods. Then you head to Patan to visit the Golden temple and the 1000 Buddha Bihar (also known as Mahabouddha). There are lots of shops that sell handicrafts here if you want to do some light shopping. Next, you drive to Sankhu Bajrayogini, also known as Bodhisattva’s temple which is a sacred place for both Hindu and Buddhist. 

  • Day 6: Drive to Lumbini (260 km)

    Leaving Kathmandu, you drive to Lumbini along the Trishuli River through Prithivi Highway and the East-West Highway. The drive should take around 6 to 7 hours. You will notice the landscape change during the drive from hills to plain lands of Terai Region of Nepal. You will rest in your hotel for the day and then plan the exploration of Lumbini for next day. 

     

  • Day 7: Sightseeing Lumbini

    Lumbini is also one of the ten UNESCO world heritage sites and is spread out over a large area. You will visit the Maya Devi temple which sits within the remains of the palace that Lord Buddha was born in. You will visit World Peace Stupa, Museum, Myanmar’s Golden Stupa and monasteries from different countries. It takes about a day to visit all the places.

  • Day 8: Return to Kathmandu 

    You will have breakfast and then drive back to Kathmandu leaving the plane lands of Terai to the refreshing hills. After you reach Kathmandu, you will be taken to your hotel. Your tour has come to an end. You can then prepare for your departure home the next day.

  • Day 9: Departure
