Chhukung is at the entrance of the Imja valley, and at its other end lies Island peak.

  • Day 09: Chhukung to Island Peak Base Camp (5200m): 3-4 hours

The climb today is short but fairly steep and tough. The terrain is rocky and rough surface, and the higher altitude will make it a bit more challenging. From Chhukung we stick to the route heading east. We reach Lhotse glacier then head alongside the glacier’s southern flank. From here, we alternate between Lhotse and Imja glacier moraines and climb up the zigzag path to the base camp.

  • Day 10: Trek to Island Peak (6189m), & back to base camp: 10-12 hours

Since the mid-day offers strong winds and unpredictable weather, we need to make it to the top before noon. The trail is rocky, with large boulders scattered across. Moving forward, the path narrows through a rocky slope which leads to a ridge. We traverse along this exposed ridgeline into the glacier terminus of the summit. There could be newly formed crevasses, and ladders or ropes may be fixed per the requirement to ensure your safe summit. The top of the island peak is majestic, you feel like you are on a deserted island amongst the majestic sea of mountains and snow. Makalu (8475m) and Baruntse (7312m) are seen on the east with Ama Dablam (6856m) on the south while Lhotse Shar (8393m) towers ahead. We then carefully descend the same trail back to the base camp.

  • Day 11: Island Peak Base Camp to Pangboche (3,930m): 5-6 hours

Today’s trek will be easier compared to our previous day as it is mostly a steady descend. Before arriving at Pangboche, you trek along Khumbu Khola valley crossing the beautiful Sherpa villages of Orsho and Shomare. Upper Pangboche like Tengboche also houses a Gompa, the oldest in the Khumbu region. We visit the monastery then head down to Pangboche. From Pangboche, it there are wonderful views of Kongde to the south and Ama Dablam (6856m), Kangtega (6685m) and Thamserku (6608 m) to the east.

  • Day 12: Pangboche to Namche Bazaar (3,440m): 4-5 hours

Our trek first follows the Imja Khola, before joining up the trail adjacent to the Dudh Koshi descending rapidly through coniferous forests. You will cross Tengboche, Sansa, and other Sherpa villages before arriving at Namche. The drop in altitude will be a nice welcome back to Namche.

  • Day 13: Namche Bazaar to Lukla (2,800m): 6-7 hours

The trail today is a long continuous descent so, take it easy on your knees. We will be crossing the suspension bridges over Dudh Koshi River and its sister tributaries. You will arrive in Lukla with sore legs but with a triumphant mind and heart full of warm memories, the chilly mountains have provided you. From the rough terrain of Everest Region to the lush rhododendron forest en route to Lukla, the trip has allowed you to experience the diverse landscape.
