  • What sort of documents are needed to visit Nepal?

Travelers wishing to visit Nepal should possess a valid passport and a valid Visa. If you do not have a Nepalese Visa, you can obtain one at the Tribhuvan International Airport or any of the entry/exit points. However, Indian nationals do not require a Visa to visit Nepal. They do need an official document to recognize themselves as Indian citizens.

While it is not mandatory to have travel insurance, it is highly recommended that travelers have proper travel insurance.

  • What is the Visa procedure to visit Nepal?

There are two methods through which you can get a Nepalese Visa. You can choose to apply for a Visa at the Nepali diplomatic missions stationed in different countries across the world. However, the most popular way to get a visa is upon your arrival. You can apply for a visa at the Tribhuvan International Airport or the various land entry/exit points in Tibet and India. You have to fill a form which needs a passport-sized photo and necessary fees. The updated visa fees to obtain a Nepalese visa are:

    • USD 30 for 15 days
    • USD 50 for 30 days
    • USD 125 for 90 days

You can find the updated fees at the official website of the Department of Immigration at http://www.nepalimmigration.gov.np/post/notice-regarding-visa-fee-updates.

You can also find more information regarding Tourist Visa at:

The facilities that you get in the hotel depends upon your preference and budget. There are numerous 3-star and 5-star hotels in Kathmandu. The services that these hotels provide vary upon your choices for accommodation. These hotels are equipped with all modern-day necessities like spacious rooms, fast internet, attached bathrooms, and delicious food. There are swimming pools, gym, and massage spa in the high-end hotels. Whereas, you can also choose hotels with basic facilities of lodging and dining.

  • What are the present conditions of the internet, its accessibility and do I need to purchase a new Sim card?

Internet is easily and widely available across Nepal. The easiest and fastest way to access the Internet is via Wi-Fi. Restaurants, cafes, and hotels offer 24/7 Wi-Fi services. Likewise, public Wi-Fi is also available in many major cities. However, the availability of Wi-Fi can get scarcer as you head to remote destinations. In such cases, you will need a Sim card to access the Internet. Sim Cards in Nepal are easily available in many of the authorized distributors. You can easily use 3G and 4G cellular network with ease.

  • What are the accommodation facilities like during the trek?

During the treks, you will be residing in a small lodge or a teahouse. These places are equipped with a single bed and share a common bathroom. The toilet is a squat one and there is no tissue paper. The rooms are not that much spacious but they are a bit cozy. Likewise, the teahouses in lower altitudes also offer additional services like hot water and electricity. However, if the trekking route heads to remote destinations, you might need to pay an extra amount to use those services.

  • Are there shower facilities during the trek and how often will I get to shower?

Yes, there are shower facilities in the teahouses and lodges on the trekking routes. However, you won’t find one in the extremely rural parts. Likewise, teahouses in remote destinations might also charge extra money to provide the trekkers with hot water for shower.

  • What sort of food will I eat during the trek?

During the trek, the ideal food to energize you is Dal Bhat which consists of rice, lentils, curry, and pickle (Achar). As Dal Bhat is the staple food in Nepal, you can easily find it in almost all the trekking routes across Nepal. The higher Himalayan regions also offer food like Thukpa which is also great to keep your body warm on the trek. You can also enjoy the snacks like chocolate and noodles but, you must carry these supplies with you.

  • Do I need to carry the luggage by myself during the trek?

Your luggage will be handled by a porter except for necessary items like cellphone, glasses, and spare clothes. You can keep your essentials in a backpack and carry it yourself. As such, at Miteri Nepal, we provide a porter for every 2 trekkers.

  • Is there a facility of English-speaking guides?

Yes, the guides who will accompany you during the trek have good command over English. Some of the guides are even fluent in other languages like Spanish, Indian, and Chinese as well. Additionally, our guides are even proficient in first aid and other essential travel requirements.

  • Do I need to pay any additional amount to the guides and porters during the trek?

The trip price that you pay covers for the salary of both the guides and porters including their insurance, equipment, food and accommodation. However, you can tip a certain amount during the trek. The common industry norm is around USD 5 per day for guides and USD 2-4 for porters.

  • While traveling in groups, how many people will there be?

The size of a group varies according to the number of available participants. However, the group size can be anywhere between 3-5 people or even 10-12 in some cases. Similarly, the number of people in a trek tends to depend on other factors like the type of trek and the trek destination. You can also choose to trek solo at a higher price. In such trips, you will travel with a guide and porter.

  • What is the scenario of banking and ATM facilities in Nepal?

There are a large number of banking and ATM facilities in most of the major cities and towns. In recent years, the banking facilities have even reached some villages. However, if you plan to take a trek, then we advise you to carry cash before trekking as it won’t be available in those parts. There are licensed money exchange counters in various parts of the city so it won’t be a problem for you. Similar to the ATM and banking services, money exchange counters are also rarely available in remote areas. So, you will have to exchange your currency in the cities. While doing so, you must have updated info regarding the exchange rates. The updated exchange rates are available at the official website of Nepal Rastra Bank at https://www.nrb.org.np/fxmexchangerate.php.

  • Do I need to fulfill any insurance compliances before taking the trek?

Although there isn’t any hard and fast rule regarding the necessity of insurance to travel to Nepal, it is highly recommended that you get one before heading out to Nepal. Some trekking agencies have mandated travel insurance so you should get one.  This travel insurance will help to cover the unforeseen events and contingent scenarios. Likewise, the travel insurance must also cover medical evacuation, Heli rescue, trip delays, trip cancellations, and other medical issues.

  • Can I get my money back if I don’t complete the trek and return halfway?

In the majority of the situations, the company will not refund you your money if you don’t complete the trek and return midways. However, it all depends upon the clauses that are mentioned in the Terms and Conditions. If there is a clause which states that you are eligible for a certain sum of money, then you can claim it.

  • How safe is a solo female travel in Nepal?

Nepal is relatively safer for a solo female traveler. This is mainly due to the social ethos of the entire country where Nepalese treat guests as gods and women as goddesses. The local people are helpful and will help solve your queries. In comparison to other countries, Nepal is much safer. However, you must be sure to keep minor travel hacks in mind. Always remember to inform your close ones and the official authorities like police about your travel itinerary.

  • Which is the most preferred time frame to explore Nepal?

For most of the trips in Nepal, there are two ideal seasons to visit Nepal. The first season is autumn which starts in September and ends in November. During this time of the year, the weather is clear with an amazing display of snow-laden mountains. Major festivals like Dashain and Tihar also fall during this very season. The other season to explore Nepal is during spring, which starts in March and ends in May. During this time, the floral beauty in the country reaches its prime. These seasons are perfect for adventurous activities like trekking, mountaineering, and peak climbing. You can visit the country throughout the year for cultural tours, jungle safari, and leisure vacations.

  • What sort of equipment do I need during the trek?

The equipment that you require mostly depends on the type of trek you are taking. If you are involved in mountain climbing, then you may require many equipments but if you are doing a simple trek, then you may not require heavy equipment. Some basic equipment that you require is a fleece jacket, trekking stick, sunglasses, headlamp, thermal gloves, thick hiking socks, and down jacket. If you go mountaineering, you might need to pick axe, harness, and crampons.

  • What are the temperature ranges during day and night in Nepal?

The temperature, weather, and climatic conditions in Nepal depend upon the geographical region/altitude and seasons. Similarly, the temperature drops every 6 degree Celsius for an increase in every 1,000 meters.

Nepal is divided into three regions, namely, the Himalayas, the Hills, and the Terai. The temperature in the mountain region of Nepal is pretty low however, the days are slightly warmer than the nights. In the hilly region, the nights are chilly whereas the days are warm. In the Terai region, the nights are relatively cooler and the days are hot.

Similarly, the weather is moderate during the autumn and spring seasons. The days are warm and the nights are chilly. In the summer/monsoon season, the weather is hot and humid in the hills and Terai. The Himalayan region is slightly warmer than in other seasons. Winter brings cold weather throughout the country and both the days and nights are relatively colder.

  • What is the fitness level required during the trek and how difficult are they?

While trekking in Nepal, you are advised to have a certain degree of fitness. However, this also depends upon the trek that you choose. Normally, treks in Nepal are graded as Easy, Moderate, and Strenuous.

For easy-level treks, you don’t need to have any sort of experience before trekking but you do need to be fit.

For moderate-level treks, you must have good stamina, endurance, and strength.

For strenuous treks, which include climbing mountains and crossing high altitude passes, you will require a certain degree of experience and excellent physical fitness.

  • Among Tea house/lodge trek and camping trek which one is suitable?

The answer to this question depends upon the trekkers and the experience they choose to have. Having said that, Teahouse treks are the most popular mode of trekking in Nepal. Teahouses along the trekking trails provide basic dining and lodging services to the trekkers. While these treks are more convenient to trekkers, camping treks offer the authentic experience of trekking in the wilderness. In camping treks, trekkers will have to cook their food and set up camps.

The trekkers can assess the pros and cons of each trekking mode and choose the best one according to their preferences.

  • What is AMS and what needs to be done to prevent it and treat it?

AMS stands for Acute Mountain Sickness and occurs when you trek above the altitude of 2,400 meters. It is most common among trekkers who indulge in high altitude treks. Its symptoms include nausea, vomiting, and headache. To prevent it, you need to trek slowly, while acclimatizing to the increasing altitude. You can also take medication like Diamox and keep yourself hydrated to avoid AMS. If these symptoms occur, descending is the first measure that should be taken if a trekker becomes a victim of altitude sickness.

  • Do I need to carry a first aid kit and personal medication?

You don’t need to carry a first aid kit as the guide will already have one. Nevertheless, having a first aid kit can come in handy on the high altitude treks. However, you must carry your medication if you are suffering from any sort of sickness. We also advise you to inform the travel operator of your medical conditions beforehand.

  • How often do the domestic flight delays take place and flight cancellation take place?

Uncontrollable situations like bad weather and technical problems are the primary causes of flight delays and cancellations. While autumn and spring seasons see such conditions in a rare number, winter and monsoon are the seasons during which flight-related issues occur the most. As such, the most common flight delay and cancellation occur in Lukla. Thus, it is always wise to allocate a day or two as buffer day(s).

  • What are my options regarding private transportation and which one should I use?

The most common form of private transportation in Nepal are taxis, cars, buses, and motorcycles. The option to choose private transportation entirely depends upon your budget and the type of trip. While Tourist Buses and Cars are ideal for highway travels, 4WD jeeps are perfect for off-road tracks. The motorcycle is the ideal choices if you choose to go for motorcycle tours. At Miteri Nepal, we cover all your hassle regarding transportation. You can also make specific requests for transportation mediums beforehand.

  • Is it better to purchase trekking equipment or rent it in Kathmandu?

Once you use the trekking equipment, it won’t be of any use to you. So, it is better that instead of buying trekking equipment, you can rent one in Kathmandu. The deals are cheap and the equipment is also up to mark. However, if you are looking to go for long trips, you should invest in the trekking equipment as per your choice of price and brand.

Thus, the decision to buy or rent the trekking equipment entirely depends on you.

  • Is it better to take a private trip or a group trip/fixed departure?

A private trip involves trekking by yourself with only a few people and guides. These types of the trip can be easily customized but tend to be a bit heavy on the pockets. These treks are perfect for families where additional adjustments have to be made. The group trips tend to be cheaper but if you don’t like crowds then it is not a viable option for you. Group trips are generalized to meet the needs of all the trekkers. You can also get to befriend other people on group trip/fixed departure trips.

  • What are the common culture and traditions in Nepal?

When you meet anyone, be sure to say ‘Namaste’ by joining your hands. Do not involve in a public display of affection like kissing. Do not point your finger at other people as it is considered rude. Do not call elders by their name and instead use titles like uncle or aunt. Likewise, it is also wise to dress properly without revealing too much of the body parts. Travelers must be especially cautious when it comes to entering and taking photographs in and around religious shrines. Most of these shrines require you to take your shoes off before entering the shrine premises and also prohibit taking any photos.

  • What are my options in the spare time left after the trek?

After finishing the trek, there might be some spare time. This spare time may have been separated as a buffer day. If you are in the major cities during this time, then you can go shopping or catch a quick movie in the theatres. You can go for souvenir shopping or visit a spa for a relaxing massage. Similarly, short hikes and adventure sports are excellent choices as well. While Kakani, Nagarkot, Chisapani, and Champadevi are prime hiking destinations, bungee jumping, rafting, paragliding, and zip-lining are few of the popular adventure sports to indulge in on your spare time.
