One of the best places only 26 km far from Kathmandu for rock climbing is Hattiban. You can easily reach the Hattiban on a short hour-long drive. From here, you will hike directly to the rock climbing site where you can indulge in the adventure sport. Along the hike, you will come across the beautiful view of Kathmandu Valley and the lush landscapes around Hattiban. With routes graded from 5.9 to 5.12, rock climbing is satisfying and thrilling.

With more than 21 routes that are 55m high, another one of the best sites for rock climbing in Nepal is the hill of Nagarjun. It is the closest climbing site to Kathmandu which is just 3 km northwest of Kathmandu which you can reach from a 20-minute drive that will take you directly to the climbing grounds. The rock climbing destination lies near to the Shivapuri National Park and, on a clear day, also boasts views of the Himalayas.

The best season to indulge in rock climbing activities would be spring and autumn when the heat is not that unbearable. Heat during the summer is scorching in this region which is why rock climbing is not advised during this season.

Itinerary

Day 01

In Hattiban

You will first take an hour-long drive from Thamel to Hattiban enjoying the changing scenery from tall buildings to cool forests. From Hattiban, you need to take a 20-minute hike to Crag from where the rock climbing starts. The time for rock climbing can range from half an hour to 2 hours depending on your skills and also the difficulty level that you choose. At the end of the activity, you can hike back to Hattiban from where you will drive back to Kathmandu.

In Nagarjun

Being only 3 km away, you will only need to take a short 20-minute drive to Nagarjun forest reserve from Kathmandu. From here, you head a bit further to reach the rock climbing site. Rock climbing can take you about 2 to 3 hours. You can choose from a multitude of climbing routes and difficulty levels. After completing the climbing session, you can head towards the nearby Buddhist monasteries and meditate. Alternatively, you can travel back to Kathmandu on a short drive.
